Size Measuring Guide
A perfect fit for your ultra-marathon running shoes is important for comfort and performance. Follow these tips to measure your foot size at home:
General Tips:
- Measure your feet at the end of the day as they're at their largest due to swelling.
- In between sizes? One foot is bigger than the other? Take the larger size.
- It's best to measure every year. Your size could change over time.
What You'll Need:
- A piece of paper larger than your foot,
- A pen or pencil,
- A ruler or measuring tape,
- Socks of the thickness you'll wear with the shoes.
Steps:
- Stand on the paper in the socks you'll wear with the shoes.
- Use the pen or pencil to mark the end of your longest toe and the back of your heel. It's important to measure both feet as their size can vary.
- Match your measurements to our size chart to find the best fit. If you're between sizes, we suggest choosing the larger size for better comfort.

R1p up the Record Books
In the spring of 2024, British ultrarunner Justin Montague took one pair of R1s to the northernmost point of Scotland to run the JOGLE, a multistage ultra to the most southerly tip of England. Over 17 daily stages he ran 854 miles (1,374 km) setting a time that was almost 40 hours faster than the previous record, and he broke each day’s individual stage record along the way.

That result was just a warm up. Since then, the R1 has guided athletes to countless personal, national and world bests, culminating in two of ultrarunning’s most prestigious records. First in spring 2025, US runner Meg Eckert covered 603 miles to shatter the women’s six-day world record. Then, less than a month later, Belgian endurance athlete Matthieu Bonne broke the 29-year-old 48-hour world record with 301 miles. Records are there to be broken and the R1 is here to R1p them up.

Experience the Consistency
To create the smoothest possible ride, Mount to Coast looked to the automotive industry to create ZeroSag, our groundbreaking midsole insert co-developed with BASF. Durable, comfortable and offering impeccable energy return at any temperature, ZeroSag guarantees extraordinary cushioning on the longest runs.
The Road to Enlightenment
LightCELL, our proprietary midsole base material, starts as a unique hybrid compound before being charged with pure nitrogen to create a supercritical foam. The result is a material that is 50 percent lighter than EVA, while offering 45 percent more energy return.

Stay in the Flow State
GOFLOW is our industry-leading midsole geometry, designed to keep your feet tracking from heel to toe. With GOFLOW, you can stay in that flow state for longer, and enjoy your natural stride.

In the relentless pursuit of distance, ultrarunners often encounter swollen feet. With the R1, your toes can relax and enjoy the ride thanks to our wide toe box and broad platform, and the TUNEDFIT Dual Lacing System offers customizable fit for the forefoot and midfoot separately.

The R1/R1R provides runners with the low weight required for performance, with all the protection they need to run day after day in the longest ultra challenges.

The double-layered jacquard fabric combines outstanding softness and perfect fit for your feet. And you can breathe easy in the knowledge we use 40 percent recycled polyester.
They look very good, and you can see good quality, very comfortable
I'm not an ultra marathoner, I mostly do marathons and half marathons. I use the R1 on most of my lower intensity runs. What I love about the R1 is I've never had any spot of concern on either foot. I forget about my shoes and feet when running in these. I just bought the R135 to use as another main training shoe. I love it too.
Run ~50 miles per week, primarily wear Altra's for daily training but just got tired of how quickly their shoes lost their pop for me (getting around 250 miles before it felt like I was running on wood blocks). The foam in the midsole feels awesome, the toe box is extremely roomy/comfortable. Totally subjective but I love the look. This shoe does what a great shoe does, disappears when running and allows you to just focus on the task, not the rubbing on your achilles or your cramped toes. Easy recommendation to anyone reading!
I've been an Altra guy for years, mostly wearing Vanish Tempo, Torin, and Provision. The generous toe box is great and I've got 200 miles logged on them so far and the shoe's performance is no worse.
I like the shoes, ran in hokas for the last few years. I still use my hokas on trail running just due to the fact I don’t want to get these dirty (I bought white). But for road running, these are sick. I never leave reviews on stuff unless I’m impressed.
-Average hobby runner
~20 miles/week, half trail in old dirty hokas, half road in these bad boys.
