Size Measuring Guide
A perfect fit for your ultra-marathon running shoes is important for comfort and performance. Follow these tips to measure your foot size at home:
General Tips:
- Measure your feet at the end of the day as they're at their largest due to swelling.
- In between sizes? One foot is bigger than the other? Take the larger size.
- It's best to measure every year. Your size could change over time.
What You'll Need:
- A piece of paper larger than your foot,
- A pen or pencil,
- A ruler or measuring tape,
- Socks of the thickness you'll wear with the shoes.
Steps:
- Stand on the paper in the socks you'll wear with the shoes.
- Use the pen or pencil to mark the end of your longest toe and the back of your heel. It's important to measure both feet as their size can vary.
- Match your measurements to our size chart to find the best fit. If you're between sizes, we suggest choosing the larger size for better comfort.

In the relentless pursuit of distance, ultrarunners often encounter swollen feet. With the R1, your toes can relax and enjoy the ride thanks to our wide toe box and broad platform, and the TUNEDFIT™ Dual Lacing System offers customizable fit for the forefoot and midfoot separately.
To create the smoothest possible ride, Mount to Coast looked to the automotive industry to create ZeroSag™, our groundbreaking midsole insert co-developed with BASF. Durable, comfortable and offering impeccable energy return at any temperature, ZeroSag™ guarantees extraordinary cushioning on the longest runs.
LightCELL™, our proprietary midsole base material, starts as a unique hybrid compound before being charged with pure nitrogen to create a supercritical foam. The result is a material that is 50 percent lighter than EVA, while offering 45 percent more energy return.
R1p up the Record Books
In the spring of 2024, before the shoe’s official launch, British ultrarunner Justin Montague took one pair of R1s to the northernmost point of Scotland to run the JOGLE, a multistage ultra to the most southerly tip of England. Over 17 daily stages he ran 854 miles (1,374 km) setting a time that was almost 40 hours faster than the previous record, and he broke each day’s individual stage record along the way.
That result was just a warm up. Since then, the R1 has guided athletes to countless personal, national and world bests, culminating in two of ultrarunning’s most prestigious records. First in spring 2025, US runner Meg Eckert covered 603 miles to shatter the women’s six-day world record. Then, less than a month later, Belgian endurance athlete Matthieu Bonne broke the 29-year-old 48-hour world record with 301 miles. Records are there to be broken and the R1 is here to R1p them up.

Absolutely love my R1s! Had already been running in the T1 for trails and this was a great addition. Supportive and firm underfoot, but very bouncy with great energy return. Looking forward to many miles!
Comfortable right out of the box, but not sure how I feel about the soles wearing after only 2 runs (total 20 miles.) Even if it’s because of how my feet strike… 20 miles should be nothing. Will see how they continue to hold, but I’m not feeling that encouraged.
The R1 definitely accommodates me under foot in multiple ways! Recommend to anyone looking for comfortable ride, not sluggish and nice response when hitting the ground!
Love ‘em so far. I have the C1s with about 180 miles and wanted to give the R1s a shot. Can’t say enough awesome things about both of the shoes: Roomy toebox, good cushion, good durability. The list goes on. Consider me a Mount to Coast believer. I went from sceptic due the instagram algo ads(never heard of them, thought they were fake) to fanatic.
I work in outdoor retail and have referred a lot of people to these. Will be adding the H1s and T1s to my rotation. 35 yr old male, 30+miles per week, 6 year running journey.
I've worn them twice, for about 20 miles. I like them so far. They're breathable and pretty lightweight. The soles feel a bit stiff, but that's probably why they're supposed to last so long. I'm a little bummed they don't have the same elastic upper laces as the trail shoe.
Very comfortable shoe. Not a wide as I thought they would be, but not bad either.
I ran on mostly grass in my new sneakers, and the bottoms of both of my feet hurt later in the day.
I run 5 days a week, and my feet didn’t hurt in my other running sneakers. Ever.
Best shoes by far I’ve searched for a while for a good ultra marathon shoe and I’ve finally found it
Don’t get me wrong..I love this brand.
Unfortunately, these did not hold up for me. After only two months of treadmill-only use, the outer foam on both shoes broke down in the same location.
Customer service was very helpful throughout the process, but according to the manufacturer, the damage was not considered a defect.
I’m very disappointed with the durability of the R1 and won’t be continuing to use this pair. That said, I’m still a fan of the brand and plan to replace them with the C1. Hopefully, the C1 will hold up better over time.
I’ll be careful and consider other options they have. I’m very disappointed. However, I’m still a fan of the C1 to replace these. Hopefully the C1 will hold up better.
I am writing this review to share my recent experience with Mount to Coast, which has been very different from my past purchases.
Previously, one of the things that impressed me most about this company was the speed of their shipping. My earlier orders were processed quickly, often with near next-day delivery, and the overall experience was reliable and efficient. This is why I felt confident continuing to place orders.
Unfortunately, my most recent order (#55754) has been a completely different experience. The order was significantly delayed, and communication throughout the process has been inconsistent and unclear.
Over several days, I received multiple assurances from customer support, including statements such as:
• “Your order has been forwarded to our warehouse team for immediate processing.”
• “I just manually pulled this order to our warehouse team for shipment.”
• “We have escalated your case to the highest priority.”
Despite these repeated updates, there was no actual confirmation of shipment and no active tracking number provided. The responses remained largely the same—apologies and reassurances—but without tangible progress.
When I raised my concerns, I expressed that what I needed was simple: confirmation that the package was in transit and a valid tracking number. Instead, the communication continued to revolve around internal processing updates rather than real results.
This experience has been disappointing, especially given how efficient and reliable the service used to be. As a customer, consistency and transparency are essential, and in this case, both were lacking.
I am sharing this experience so that other customers are aware and can make informed decisions before placing an order.
The shoes gives me great stability and cushion. I don’t love big bulky shoes and these provide all of what I need in a shoe and feel light and responsive.
Received my first pair of R1’s in 2024 and wore them for the Fat Ox 6 hour, then turned around that December and wore them for a 72 hour race. I spend a lot of time in my shoes. I wore the R1’s straight out of the box going into my race, just as I have every time I get them. The R1’s are light on the feet and have been great mile after mile in a race upwards of 135 miles for me. I average 250 miles a month, alone, running in my shoes. The fact these shoes are light weight, true to size, can be worn mile after mile make them an excellent choice for 100 milers. They have a dual lacing system which permits loosening of the shoe if your feet swell during racing. I wear them true to size whether training or racing. They are my go to shoe on Speedwork days. And, if you ever question a toe box, just go 1/2 size up. However, I’ve never had to with the R1. I highly recommend R1’s for daily training and racing. They’ve been an irreplaceable staple in my MTC collection.
Took my R1’s for their maiden voyage yesterday and these are hand down the most comfortable running shoes I’ve ever owned. The dual lace system made the fit perfect. My feet are on the wider side, not wide enough to need EE’s, but often too wide for Nike’s and several other brands. These are just right and I feel the toe box is as roomy/comfortable as my previous pair of Altras. I couldn’t be happier.
I live the R1 durability. I just got my new ones yesterday but have not unboxed because my agave R1 just won’t die. They have life left after hundreds and hundreds of miles. Soles are still in tact and although worn the cushion is still there for many more miles.
